Bio

John Yuan has been performing for audiences for over 20 years, playing at clubs, festivals, and outdoor stages throughout the DMV.
With influences ranging from traditional jazz pianists such as Bill Evans and McCoy Tyner, to more eclectic artists such as Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, to even modern influences such as Snarky Puppy and Go Go Penguin John brings a wide variety of musical tastes and genres all through the lens of the Jazz/Fusion realm.  

Getting his start while a student at The University Of Pittsburgh, John honed his skills at the Open Jam sessions at James Street Restaurant getting a veritable PhD in Jazz while learning and playing with Ken Karsh, Arnold Stagger, Brian Edwards, and Victor Provost.   Later on, he studied under Tom Glovier and started out with Rodney McCoy before making his way to the DC area.

In the last decade John has played at places such as Twins Jazz, Bossa Bistro and Lounge, The Bayou, New Deal Cafe, Black Cat, Kaow Thai Restarant, Jake's American Grille, Viva Vienna, Barking Mad Cafe, Roofers Union, Bump 'N Grind and the H Street Festival.   

Currently he is playing both solo/duo as John Yuan Jazz at Bourbon Boulevard in Chantilly every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month.   In addition you can see him with his Funk/Jazz/Fusion/Electronica project The Funktronics and Jazz/Soul/R&B with Energy Of The Soul and Friends. Starting in 2024, he has also joined Potecasi Slade and the Saturday Night Specials, a bluesy Funk/Rock project.   All dates are listed on the Shows page.
